Bathrooms
- Check faucets for drips or leaks. Make repairs to save water.
- Ensure that all drains have strainers to prevent hair, soap and debris from clogging the drain lines.
Check toilets for hidden leaks. Add a few drops of food coloring to the toilet tank. If your toilet is leaking then you will see color appear in the bowl within 30 minutes. - Inspect the toilet tank and bowl for cracks or leaks.
- Make sure that toilets flush properly. If the handle must be held down for a thorough flush, or jiggled to stop the water from running, then you may need to replace worn toilet parts. They’re inexpensive and you’ll have a lower water bill after they are replaced.
- Turn water supply valves under sinks and toilets to prevent them from sticking.
- Clean any mineral deposits from your showerheads. Unscrew the showerhead and soak it in vinegar. Or you can fill a plastic baggie with vinegar, place it over the showerhead and hold it in place with a rubber band. Soak it overnight then remove and gently scrub with an old toothbrush to dislodge the mineral deposits.
Appliances
- Spending a few minutes on the maintenance of your water heater will help to extend it’s life….
- Check the temperature setting. It should not be set higher than 120`F to prevent scalding. This will also help to reduce energy costs.
- Carefully drain several gallons from the water heater. This will flush out any sediments that can cause corrosion. This corrosion reduces the energy efficiency as well as shortens the life of the water heater.
